Unique Mentoring Model
Founded in 2016, Friends of the Children–SF Bay Area improves long-term outcomes for youth who face Adverse Childhood Experiences (or ACEs) and the immense barriers created by systemic racism. Our mission is to effect generational change by empowering youth through a long-term relationship with a Professional Mentor for 12+ years, no matter what! Our organization is part of a national network that has been disrupting generational cycles of poverty, violence, and trauma for 30 years.
The Power of One
We spark generational change by pairing youth facing the greatest obstacles with a paid, Professional Mentor for 12+ years, no matter what!
Our Impact
Our Professional Mentors each support up to eight youth, meeting one-on-one every week through school visits, outings, and steady check-ins. Over 12+ years, they help the youth they serve build academic confidence, practice problem-solving, and develop hope and perseverance, all by consistently showing up with an open heart and listening ear. The result is real generational change. And it works: 92% of youth enroll in post-secondary education, serve our country, or enter the workforce; 83% graduate high school; 93% stay out of the justice system; and 98% wait to parent until adulthood.
